2018 Outlier Award Nominee Profile: Philip Irby

JUL 16, 2018

Successful technology leaders are creative, communicative, business-minded and consistently balance the demands of quarter and year-end goals with available digital solutions. They are innovative and thoughtful, they work to bridge the gaps in multifaceted organizations to streamline team communication. They openly hear everyone’s perspectives. And of course, they stay on top of current developments in their sphere and make strategic predictions critical to long-term planning.

When it comes to raising the stakes in this role, Philip Irby is all in. As the CIO of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Philip was one of our esteemed 2018 nominees for the prestigious Outlier Award presented at our annual Evolve Conference. The following is our top takeaways from his insightful words:

Build for Collaboration: Standing as the newest resort on the strip, The Cosmopolitan has had the unique opportunity to embrace digital solutions from the get-go, as well as the challenge to distinguish itself amongst the Vegas scene. Irby has navigated both with ease, staying true to his belief in designing infrastructure for collaboration. “To be a successful IT leader, you’ve got to have a focus on integration architectures, be able to build a platform that others can create ideas on, and move at the speed that the business needs.” His platforms create space for the team ideation and communication critical to standout innovation.

Work from the Ground Up: In a field of constant change and the ever-present notion of the “next big thing,” it takes a truly experienced leader to step back from the day-to-day operations to focus and build a solid foundation that can support ongoing development. Irby calls this sustainable innovation. “We have to be singularly focused on building the foundation that helps us to deliver for the business.” The Cosmopolitan’s most recent milestone, the Identity Online program, relies on their IT’s foundational platform. The interface elevates the guest experience by allowing communication with the team right from their own devices.

Grow Intrinsic Motivation: Irby’s passion for innovation becomes evident in only a brief interaction. He doesn’t settle to simply maintain the existing systems. Instead, he pushes The Cosmopolitan’s IT team to deliver game-changing services that propel the resort as a leader in its market. “This brand is on the cutting edge on a number of fronts and we’re pushing the envelope in a number of ways. For me to stand pat and simply deliver the status quo is not even an option.”
